The Credit Union Difference
Credit unions have some similarities to banks, such as both offer financial products like checking and savings accounts, mortgages, credit cards, and vehicle and personal loans. Plus, both are federally insured. But that's where the similarities stop.
Credit unions were established during the Great Depression, when it was difficult for an average person to get a loan. People decided to pool their money together and help each other by lending their money to one another at a lower rate. This is where the current credit union philosophy of "people helping people" came from and it is still in practice today.
Credit unions were established as not-for-profit financial cooperatives, which means profits are returned to the members in the form of lower loan rates, higher savings, and free or low cost fees.
All members of a credit union are owners of that credit union and as a member-owner this means you democratically control that credit union and regardless of how much money you have at that credit union, you still have an equal voice.
