Mutual Fund

A Mutual Fund is a pooling of investors' (shareholders') assets, which is professionally managed by an investment company for the benefit of the fund's shareholders. Mutual funds typically invest in stocks, bonds, and money market instruments. They offer shareholders the advantage of diversification and professional management for a relatively modest investment. Each fund has specific investment objectives and associated risk.

Stock

A Stock is an instrument that signifies an ownership position, or equity, in a corporation. Stockholders (shareholders) have a claim on a proportionate share in the corporation's assets, profits, and liabilities, and are often entitled to dividends and voting rights.

Bond

A Bond is a security that represents a loan to the government or corporation (the issuer). The issuer is obligated to pay the bondholder a specified sum of money, usually at specific intervals, and repay the principal amount of the loan at maturity. Bondholders have an IOU from the issuer but no corporate ownership privileges, as stockholders do.

Annuity

An Annuity is a retirement contract issued by an insurance company that provides for periodic payments for a lifetime, or a defined period of time, or both. With some annuities your earnings have an opportunity to grow tax-deferred until you begin taking withdrawals. This means money that would have been paid in taxes each year remains invested to potentially earn you more. Periodic payments can begin immediately (immediate annuity) or deferred to a later date (deferred annuity), and may be either fixed or variable.

Unit Investment Trust

Unit Investment Trust (UIT) is an investment company that purchases a fixed portfolio of securities such as corporate, municipal or government bonds, mortgage-backed securities, common stock, or preferred stock. The trust expires when bonds mature or, in the case of equity funds, at a specified future date. Unit holders receive an undivided interest in both the principal and the income portion of the portfolio in proportion to the amount they invest.
